AI Overviews and AI Mode: SEO for a Business Website in 2026
Google says the basics still matter for AI Overviews and AI Mode. The difference is that weak content and technical debt have less room to hide.
How to measure website speed, Core Web Vitals, and successful enquiries. Lab measurements versus the experience of real visitors.
Website speed decides how quickly a visitor reaches your content or your form. It does not guarantee a search position, and it does not guarantee enquiries either.
You find that out by comparing your own numbers before and after.
A lab run finds the technical cause under conditions you control. Field data from real users tells you something else, which is what happens on the hardware and the networks nobody chose deliberately, on pages that were never part of the test plan. You need both.
Lab results help diagnose a fault. Field data helps assess its user impact.
Write down which page you are measuring before you touch anything. Record the devices and the traffic source too. Without them, the second measurement has nothing honest to sit against. Then compare equal stretches of time, and track form errors or completed purchases alongside the speed numbers, and report the technical improvement separately from the business outcome.
LCP measures when the main content appears. INP shows what happens after someone taps, which is the moment a person waits to find out whether the interface noticed them at all, or whether the page froze. CLS measures unexpected layout movement.
Google explains how these signals relate to page experience.
The metrics are a diagnosis. A good LCP does not help when the form drops the submission, and low CLS will not rescue an offer nobody understands.
Start with the entry pages that get the most traffic, then the journeys you cannot afford to lose.
Then work through the technical suspects.
Change one hypothesis at a time. Two at once and all you learn is that something moved.
Google recommends LCP within 2.5 seconds and INP below 200 milliseconds. The CLS threshold is 0.1.
Check the Core Web Vitals definitions. When real-user data is missing, write the result down as unknown, and leave it there until enough visits have accumulated for the number to carry any weight. A lab score is not a substitute.
On mobile, check the responsive layouts as well.
For phone enquiries, define how calls or telephone-link clicks are recorded. A click does not prove a call took place.
A consultation can set up the measurement and the technical plan. The post-release comparison runs on matched periods.

Find where mobile customers leave the purchase. Test forms, delivery costs and payment before deciding whether the whole shop needs rebuilding.
A smaller layout is only the start. Check content, controls and task completion on mobile, then fix barriers on the pages people use most.
