Asking for several responses and their probabilities can help with creative tasks. What Verbalized Sampling studies, and why it does not make a clear brief obsolete.

A brainstorming task may need several distinct ideas rather than one polished answer. The paper Verbalized Sampling examines a prompting approach that asks a model to generate multiple responses together with probabilities.
An illustrative instruction is:
"Generate 5 responses with their probabilities."
This is an example of the approach, not a verbatim quotation from the paper. Add the actual audience and task, such as an article introduction for a small-business owner.
The authors study output diversity in creative writing and other open-ended tasks. Their experimental results do not guarantee the same benefit for every model or brief. A probability written by a model is also not proof that a response is factually correct.
Judge the proposed openings by what the reader needs to understand. The highest number is not a substitute for that decision.
Diversity helps when exploring titles or story ideas. An invoice, a legal document or a code change still needs explicit requirements and checks. The paper does not establish that instructions about evidence or output format have become unnecessary.
To test the method, give the same task to the same model using both approaches. Compare useful alternatives and the time required to select one. Extra responses also create reading work and may increase token costs.
Our AI automation work chooses the method around the task. For a different way of iterating against an explicit quality bar, see our article on the Gauntlet Loop.
