What to automate first in a small business
Choose a first automation by scoring the work, data, risk, ownership, and reversibility. Then validate one pilot before you expand it.
API tokens can cost less than a developer hour, but tokens are not the whole project. A practical comparison of model usage, review, testing, and operating costs.
An API run can cost less than one dollar. That does not make the software project a one-dollar project.
Someone still defines the task and supplies the right context. A person reviews the patch, runs the tests, fixes what comes back red, ships the change, then carries it in production long after the model has forgotten it existed. Tokens are one line in the cost model. They are still worth measuring because an unmetered pilot can turn into an unreadable monthly bill.
The table uses selected rates before tax to explain the calculation. Terra uses the rate before the July price reduction, Sonnet the vendor announcement and Gemini the price list checked on 19 October 2026. This is not a single-date snapshot or a current quote.
Providers price input and output tokens separately. Input is the instruction and the system rules, the conversation so far and the repository slices the agent pulled in, plus every line the tools handed back. Output is the model response, the generated code, and in some products the reasoning tokens spent producing it.
Coding agents are input-heavy. They read the same files over and over, plus test results and terminal errors, then the diffs they just produced. One user request can trigger many model requests, which is why the token count on an agent run rarely resembles anything you would guess from the prompt you typed.
Standard prices per million tokens in USD:

| Model | Input | Output | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI GPT-5.6 Terra | $2.50 | $15.00 | Long-context requests cost more. |
| Anthropic Claude Sonnet 5 | $2.00 | $10.00 | The vendor later made this rate permanent. |
| Google Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview | $2.00 | $12.00 | For prompts up to 200k tokens. |

This table does not rank coding quality. A model with a lower listed rate can cost more if it needs extra attempts or creates more review work.
Terra rates fell after the 30 July OpenAI announcement. Anthropic confirmed on 10 August that Sonnet 5 rates would remain permanent. This table does not rank current offers.
These volumes are transparent examples, not productivity benchmarks.

| Scenario | Volume | GPT-5.6 Terra | Sonnet 5 | Gemini 3.1 Pro |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light assistance | 150k input + 20k output | $0.68 | $0.50 | $0.54 |
| Heavier agent run | 500k input + 60k output | $2.15 | $1.60 | $1.72 |
| Aggregate across several calls | 1.5M input + 150k output | $6.00 | $4.50 | $4.80 |
Scenario volumes are totals across a run rather than the context of one request. For Gemini, every individual call is assumed to remain within the 200k-token threshold. Larger requests need the corresponding higher rate.
The formula is straightforward:
cost = input tokens × input rate + output tokens × output rate
Web search, sandboxes, cache storage, regional processing, and other tools can add charges. An uncontrolled retry loop pays for every failed attempt.
On 19 October 2026, the Platy.sk survey reported gross monthly pay of €1,764 to €4,179 for 80% of programmer respondents in Slovakia. This is an employee survey rather than a software delivery rate.
Neither number maps directly to token pricing. Employ someone and you are also paying payroll costs, equipment and the management time that keeps them productive, plus the weeks of the year when nobody is at that desk. A contractor rate already has coordination and risk priced into it, along with expertise you are not building in-house. No token table reaches architectural judgment or domain context. Neither does it name the person who answers when the decision turns out wrong.

The strongest cases have a clear boundary and an automated way to verify the result:
A senior engineer may supervise several bounded tasks in parallel. Whether that saves time depends on the review work each result needs. The operating model still needs a human in the loop. Every shipped change needs an owner and evidence.
Costs rise when the task has no defined outcome, the repository lacks tests, the context is dumped without selection, or the agent repeats the same failed approach. Review becomes the bottleneck when nobody can quickly judge domain correctness.
The cheapest model is not always the cheapest path. A measured multi-model strategy can route classification and summarization to a lower-cost model while reserving harder decisions for the model that needs fewer corrections.
Track the cost of a completed task, not the price of a million tokens:
net time benefit in hours = time without AI − time with AI, including setup, review and rework
Report API and operating costs separately in money. For a financial comparison, value both time figures at the same hourly rate, then subtract those costs. Assess operating risks separately rather than treating them as hours in this calculation.
Pick ten repeated tasks for a pilot. Measure time without AI, time with AI, model usage, review comments, and regressions. After a month you will know where the agent helps and where it simply moves the same work from a keyboard into somebody else's review queue.
Start with a narrow AI automation pilot if you want that comparison run on a real workflow or repository. The deliverable is measured evidence rather than a promised percentage saving.

Choose a first automation by scoring the work, data, risk, ownership, and reversibility. Then validate one pilot before you expand it.

Microservices buy independent change at a real operating cost. Compare both models through boundaries, ownership, data, deployment, and signals that justify extraction.
A model plan for one recurring task. Measure today’s work, set data permissions and output review, then decide whether the trial should continue.
